Mousepaw listened to Ferretheart's story about her mother having mentored Badgerstar as a Warrior, following the she-cat to where they would begin hunting. The Apprentice had never really asked her father any stories about when he was her age, or what he was like as a Warrior. Come to think of it, no one had ever really told Mousepaw about either of her parents. When Ferretheart stated that Badgerstar was arrogant, Mousepaw felt a bristle of protectiveness.
"My father's not arrogant," Mousepaw said, lifting her chin haughtily. "Arrogance is confidence that you can't back up. And he always can." The silver she-cat stopped when her mentor did, eyeing her surroundings carefully.

Ferretheart laughed, seeing the apprentices similarities with her father was quite funny. The fact that she sounded almost like him made her think of what the apprentice would be capable of later in her life. "You two noticeably are related," Ferretheart started, "And not just by looks." She mewed as she began to explain what it was the two were doing at the hunting grounds and how it would work. "Anyways, this is the hunting grounds!" The warrior explained, "This is the most popular spot where I only share to my apprentices and close friends, which you happen to be both." Ferretheart winked as she walked around. "I'm sure you know that being stealthy is vital when hunting, for if you aren't, you don't get the taste of meat in your mouth." Ferretheart said, "I'll show you how to hunt, but I want to see you try what you know first." The mentor explained, "I will wait here and see if you are successful on your first catch. Bring me back what you have, be it nothing or prey." The she-cat demanded. "Start!"
OOC: You can use the dice for her catch or not, depending on if you want her to be lucky or just not do it right.

Mousepaw wondered, for only a brief moment, what Ferretheart might mean when she said Mousepaw and Badgerstar were noticeable related. She didn't the chance to become offended, however, because her mentor had begun speaking again, explaining where they were, why, and what they were to be doing there. However, when Ferretheart told Mousepaw to hunt now, the young silver Apprentice felt a wave of anxiety flood over her.
Before she had time to protest her mentor called 'Start!', and Mousepaw, not really knowing what to do, took off in some direction as instructed. This should be easy," Mousepaw mumbled quietly, though she wasn't sure she believed herself. After traveling for several moments she let out a low hiss and growled, "What kind of mentor doesn't even teach their Apprentice anything before sending them off on their own? She's going to make me look stupid just because she's lazy..."
The Apprentice's pity party was interrupted by the sound of a robin's wings fluttering as it landed to the ground just a few tail-lengths in front of her. Mousepaw sucked in her breath and immediately dropped to a crouch, hoping that her instincts would be enough to help her successfully catch this bird so she could rub it in her mentor's face. G70xYS3t As it turned out, perhaps Ferretheart's choice to send Mousepaw off hadn't been premature, though Mousepaw wouldn't be the one to admit it: The silver she-cat wriggled her haunches and sailed soundlessly through the air, hooking the robin by its tail and back as she landed before bringing it to her mouth to quickly end its life. The silver she-cat let out a squeak of delight as she turned, her catch still in her teeth, and trotted back to Ferretheart.
Upon entering the clearing, the young she-cat set the robin on the ground proudly and mewed haughtily, "I must be a natural at this."

Ferretheart laughed, "Well, we are cats," the mentor started, "it's sorta our thing." she purred, looking down at the robin that Mousepaw had caught. "Robins are hard to get usually, especially for an apprentice that has zero hunting experience." Ferretheart mewed, "Great work." she said in a bland tone, but she meant it, and she could feel that Mousepaw had understood what she meant as well. And while Ferretheart wanted to give Mousepaw another challenge, she figured that it would probably be nice to review a little bit, along with give her any tips. "So, how did you catch it?" The warrior asked, beginning to think of what to have the apprentice do next, which would obviously be burying the prey so that they could continue hunting and come back later to pick it up.

Mousepaw's tail flicked and she chose to ignore Ferretheart's cheeky comment that they were good at hunting because they were cats. While it partially took away from Mousepaw's pride at doing well, it did also relieve some of the stress and pressure of the hunt for her; maybe she didn't need to try too hard because she'd just be naturally good at it. The silver she-cat puffed out her chest proudly at her mentor's praises, but when the she-cat asked what Mousepaw had done to catch it, Mousepaw's mouth opened with a classy, "Uhhhh...."
She scrunched her face as she tried to think. It had happened so quickly... "Well, I... I saw it a couple tail-lengths in front of me on the ground, and so I crouched really fast so it wouldn't notice me right away," she began, "but I think if I had stayed still too long, it would've noticed me and I wouldn't have been able to get to it before it flew away. So I jumped at it and grabbed it - just as it was trying to take off, too." For a moment she hesitated. Had she done the wrong thing? 'No, mouse-brain,' she thought to herself, 'you caught it. That's the right thing.'

Ferretheart nodded approvingly, "Well done." She mewed, beginning to teach Mousepaw what to do next. "Now, to preserve the prey, we will be digging a small hole to keep it in. We can dig it up later when we come back around here." She explained, "Then we can go hunting again, I'll be with you this time, though." Ferretheart explained.

Mousepaw fought the strong urge to roll her eyes when Ferretheart began to explain that she needed to dig a hole to preserve the prey. 'She better not try telling me how to dig the hole,' the ThunderClan Apprentice thought ruefully. She had been burying her own dirt since she was a kitten; she certainly didn't need her mentor to give her an example. Mousepaw went right to work digging a hole for the robin, then plopped it in unceremoniously and scooped the dirt back on top, patting it gently down to make it less conspicuous to passersby.
The silver she-cat turned quickly around to face her mentor and said, "There, I buried the dumb bird. I'm ready to move on when you are." ((OoC: A talk about "give thanks to StarClan for the life of the prey you catch" may be in order, though I don't think Mouse'll listen. xD))

Ferretheart laughed, beginning to show Mousepaw what it is she shall do next. "Thanks to StarClan for presenting us with this wonderful new catch of prey." The mentor mewed, a tone that she knew was meant to encourage Mousepaw to say the same. Ferretheart smiled at Mousepaw, "Being the leaders daughter and all, I expect you to say it just like all the other apprentices and warrior do." She teased.

For a moment, Mousepaw stared at Ferretheart with a dumbfounded expression on her face. The Warrior didn't really expect her to say that nonsense, right? StarClan may have given the Clans the forest, but Mousepaw caught that bird by herself. They didn't give her anything. When Ferretheart went on to insist, however, the young silver she-cat gritted her teeth and said, '"Thanks to StarClan for presenting us with this wonderful new catch of prey." She resisted the strong urge to roll her eyes as she spoke.

Ferretheart sounded off a small laugh, trying to hide it from her obviously very emotional Mousepaw. She understood that the apprentice was growing up, but Ferretheart never remembered acting so...angsty. Although, the she-cats memory was starting to fade since she was having new ones with her new apprentices' and all. The learning had been fun for her, obviously not for Mousepaw, though.
The mentor Thin over with Mousepaw, beginning to reexplain all of what to do, remembering that she needed to take a little less control and let her apprentice do some work too. After all, the apprentice was supposed to be the one learning, not Ferretheart. But with all of this new mentor stuff, she had a harder time what was up with Mousepaw's attitude than what she was doing wrong when hunting, which seemed to be nothing. The mentor then signalled Mousepaw to begin once more on catching, sending her off again as the teacher herself began to go for a small hunting trip.

Mousepaw listened attentively to her mentor as the she-cat began to explain how to hunt now - the thing that, in Mousepaw's opinion, Ferretheart should have done in the first place. Now that the lesson was truly underway, the young silver Apprentice's temper began to calm a little. She was engaged when her mentor would give tips or advice, and asked quick clarifying questions every once in a while, showing that she was paying attention. While she was a little impatient to get started again, she showed no signs as she learned different techniques for hunting.
When Ferretheart indicated that they were to separate to hunt, Mousepaw nodded, responding in an almost pleasant tone, "Good luck." She padded into the underbrush, her tail straight behind her, and once she was submerged in the foliage she began to really listen, her ears flicking every which way in search of a promising sound of prey. She tried to ignore the sounds that she made, and the sounds of Ferretheart padding off the other way, and really focused. After walking for a short while, she decided to pause, crouching low and breathing slowly.
Within the earth, Mousepaw heard soft rumbling and scrabbling - somewhere, there was a creature running through a tunnel. It was close to the surface, perhaps that meant it was coming out of a hole somewhere? She kept still, muscles tightening as she searched with her eyes and ears for any sign of the creature she hoped to find. However, the scurrying soon subsided, and with an annoyed huff, the Apprentice carried on with her search. JFLu6USJ

Ferretheart trotted inside the forest, trying her best to avoid all noisy spots while she hunted. The mentor left her ears perked, hoping to find any type of prey soon. She unsheathed her claws, hearing flying above her and hoping it wasn't anything too dangerous. Ferretheart looked up, seeing nothing but flying feathers circling. Dead prey wasn't something she hunted for, she was probably best off to believe she should search for her own kills. The ThunderClan she-cat suddenly heard a shaking around her, spotting a rabbit cleaning its self next to a tree. It was a risky move considering it could easily be able to run into the ground, perhaps even its den if it lived under or inside the tree. She was hopeful that Mousepaw would be able to catch something, stalling to let the apprentice catch something more than just a fallen feather on the ground. Ferretheart crouched down, careful to not step in the leaves as she began to approach the rabbit as silently as possible. Her eyes turned to slits as she Thin through a spot of light that had flicked through the trees, which was the slightest bit distracting, but the she-cat still had hopes. tqpPFAoJ And yes, she had been able to catch it despite the amount she doubted it, but it was still possible for the she-cat to loose her next catch, if she was getting another catch, that is.

After several minutes of quiet wandering through the forest, birds warmly chirping, frogs and bugs singing, Mousepaw felt much more at ease. While she hadn't been able to catch - or even find - anything yet, having been taught what to do and what to look and listen for as well as being given time alone made Mousepaw less nervous than she had been. She wouldn't admit to nerves, of course, but she had been worried she would be unable to live up to her father's expectations and the reputation ThunderClan had of being strong and skilled.
Her first catch had been successful, without even having been taught the techniques yet, and she felt herself a natural. Being unable to locate prey was something that she could train and hone into perfection, and something she could blame on the environment as well. Sometimes there just wouldn't be anything there to catch, and Mousepaw felt comforted by that fact.
The ThunderClan Apprentice walked into another clearing and immediately crouched to a halt, staring ahead at a bird. She watched it intently for a moment before preparing to spring. Unfortunately, it spotted her and fluttered away easily. Mousepaw stood and watched it with a soft hiss. Oh, well. Maybe Ferretheart was having a hard time, too. DawkvnCa

Ferretheart had decided her catching desires were done for, she didn't want to get too cocky and didn't want to come back with loads of prey and make Mousepaw feel bad if she were to get nothing. So, the she-cat made her way to the clearing where she had her apprentice had been set to go hunt only moments ago.
The mentor waited, seeing the familiar fur of Mousepaw's in the spaces between the trees surrounding them. Ferretheart watched the she-cat intently, seeing only a few mistakes that every apprentice made and that she would address next time they spoke.

Mousepaw continued her search. It could have been hours, but it was probably only minutes, before she saw her next sign of life: a thick gray tail Thin slowly, casually, into the bushes just a fox-length away. Though she wasn't sure wasn't type of bird it was, she did know a little bit about birds now. It would be able to feel or see her coming before it heard her, so she needed to move softly but quickly. She made her way towards it, holding her breath.
Unfortunately, it didn't seem to matter. The dove fluttered up out of the bushes with a somewhat ungraceful flap of its wings and into the trees above, far from Mousepaw's reach. Maybe she wasn't such a natural at this. She padded back to her mentor and sat heavily in the clearing, mumbling, "It didn't go very well." 0FU8frNr
